The Christmasaurus | Tom Fletcher | Review

“That’s the wonderful thing about Christmas. Every step you take away from last Christmas brings you one step closer to the next.”

The Christmasaurus is a story about a boy named William Trundle, and a dinosaur, the Christmasaurus. It’s about how they meet one Christmas Eve and have a magical adventure. It’s about friendships and families, sleigh bells and Santa, singing elves and flying reindeer, music and magic. It’s about discovering your heart’s true desire, and learning that the impossible might just be possible.

How have I not read this book before? I can’t believe I only picked it up this year. This is definitely a firm favourite of mine now, and I will be rereading it for Christmas’ to come. What adds to the already magical element of this book is that I found my copy in a charity shop for 99p and it is signed. I was pleased when I found it but now I’ve read it I am thrilled!

Where do I even start with The Christmasaurus. Such a magically wonderfully written book. It is a well known fact that this year I am a Grinch, I am working all through christmas including christmas day and to get into the spirit is something I am really finding difficult. Well you can ignore that statement now, THIS BOOK HAS GIVEN ME MY CHRISTMAS SPIRIT. I LOVE SANTA.

The Christmasaurus was a delight from start to finish. The writing style of this book is so unique. I find that children’s books sometimes can be written in a very confusing and adult way, and definitely not in a way that children will fully understand. Tom Fletcher writes like a child, he writes like a child is telling the story and I absolutely love that. It makes it such an enchanting and exciting read, even if you are an adult reader.

So many important topics are also explored in this book including bullying, disability and grief to name a few. Some of the topics are quite sad and heart wrenching at times. However, they are all managed so delicately and send such important messages out to children.

I love William so much, so many times I just wanted to dive into the book and give him a hug. I also love his dad, what a wonderful man. And the dinosaur. Well he goes without saying. He is such a good, funny, loveable character and I just cannot get enough of him. I wonder whether Santa will bring me a Christmasaurus this year if I ask very nicely? Please? I’ve been a good girl.

This was the perfect read for this time of year and it really has lifted my mood. I want to start this book all over again. However I have the sequel to dive into and I am going to be doing that immediately. This book is a must for this time of year. I will be reading it for many times to come, and I will be sharing it with my own little family one day I am sure.
