Disclaimer: I refuse to use the words illness/problems etc. in relation to mental health. It is not an illness or a problem, it is a part of my life, a part of me that I will embrace. Therefore I find the word “challenge” more appropriate, mental health can be a challenge however it is something that I will always overcome.
Mental health stigmatisation is something that is still prevalent in society today, albeit less than previous years; it is still apparent. I am keen to challenge this stigma and promote the awareness of the mental health challenges that people face on a day to day basis. Since beginning my bookstagram journey I have met many people who face the same challenges of mental health that I face also, but are also aware of the stigma and the little knowledge that wider society holds. I want to change this.
As part of spreading awareness I decided to set up a book club on Instagram whereby we read one book a month that centres on the subject of mental health. At the start of the following month we will discuss the book in depth in relation to whether it promotes mental health in a positive way. If it does, I will actively encourage the book community to read said book.
There are currently over 30 people in the January 2019 book club and I am hoping that throughout the year word will spread and we will have more people involved.
I aim to post in this section each month regarding the book we have read and my thoughts on the book in relation to the representation of mental health. I will also gather small paragraphs from some of my lovely book club members so that we can have a wide range of opinions for the book of the month.
