House of Blood and Earth (Crescent City #1) | Sarah J Maas | Review

“Through love, all is possible.”

Bryce Quinlan had the perfect life—working hard all day and partying all night—until a demon murdered her closest friends, leaving her bereft, wounded, and alone. When the accused is behind bars but the crimes start up again, Bryce finds herself at the heart of the investigation. She’ll do whatever it takes to avenge their deaths.

Hunt Athalar is a notorious Fallen angel, now enslaved to the Archangels he once attempted to overthrow. His brutal skills and incredible strength have been set to one purpose—to assassinate his boss’s enemies, no questions asked. But with a demon wreaking havoc in the city, he’s offered an irresistible deal: help Bryce find the murderer, and his freedom will be within reach.

As Bryce and Hunt dig deep into Crescent City’s underbelly, they discover a dark power that threatens everything and everyone they hold dear, and they find, in each other, a blazing passion—one that could set them both free, if they’d only let it.

I don’t even know where to start. I am happy. I am sad. I am angry. I am broken. I need help.

I had so much hope going into this book, I absolutely love Sarah J Maas and have loved everything I have read from her so far. I was slightly apprehensive as I wasn’t sure how well Sarah was going to fit into the adult world and I feared that I wouldn’t love it as much as her others. I had absolutely no need to worry. I ABSOLUTELY BLOODY LOVED THIS BOOK.

I have already called it. House of Blood and Earth will be in my top 3 books of the year. Who am I kidding? It will be my absolutely favourite book of the year.

I toyed with writing this review now as I only finished the book an hour ago. I didn’t know whether to wait and get my thoughts together first. But I just cant wait, I just want to shout from the rooftops about how amazing this book is. How much everybody needs to read it.

Right, now for the actual review. I have finished fingerling … for now.

Sarah J Maas, has a wonderful way of world-building. Honestly this world is one of the most complex that I have every read. There are so many different hierarchies, so much going on and so much to get your head around. I will admit that the first 200 pages were fairly slow burn and quite difficult to get your head around as everything is just so complex. I recommend that you try and tab the book so that you can go back to parts if you want to clarify points. PLEASE keep going with it, the effort you put into the first 200 ish pages will 100% pay off after. You will find that you take in a lot more than you think and as you get further things will start making sense for you. I think my favourite thing is that any magical being/creature that you think of will be in this book. You name it, I can guarantee it is here and I love that!

THE CHARACTERS. Oh man. Maas really knows how to play with my heart. I love so so many of them, I just don’t even know where to start. BRYCE you are my hero and I love you so much. Wow. What a strong female protagonist. From page one I was routing for her and as I got to know her more I just loved her with all of my heart. Every fragment of my heart is attached to Bryce. She may actually be one of my favourite characters ever. In fact, yes she is exactly that. I love how she builds such wonderful relationships with other characters. Danika, oh Danika, I love you so so much. Honestly, my love for you is so strong. She was also a wonderful strong independent character that I just could not get enough of. Her and Bryce’s relationship was beautiful, one only every other girl in the world can wish for with their best friend. HUNT. Oh my life. Hunt. You beautiful beautiful man. Ahhhhh definitely my man crush in this book. Before going in this book I always said that I wanted another Rhysand, I NEEDED another Rhysand. Oh I got my Rhysand. I am so pleased. I cant wait to see the character art for Hunt *dribbles*. I love his relationship with Bryce, I just love him as a character. I JUST LOVE HIM. Other honourable mentions go to Ruhn, Tharion, Declan, Fury, Connor, Lehabah. There are so so many I could literally go on for days talking about this. But I won’t.

I will say however, where was the smut? I actually feel frustrated for the characters in this book. Each time I thought a good bit of smut was coming, BAM something happens and its cut off. WHAT ARE YOU DOING TO US SARAH? I mean I don’t really enjoy books with smut unless Sarah J Maas has written them and then I enjoy books with smut. I went into this book anticipating  a lot of said smut. But I was left disappointed! Not in a bad way, I’m sure she’ll make up for it in the next one. You’ll know exactly what I mean if you have read A Court of Mist and Fury, that scene! If you havent read it. Hi, where have you been? Read it now! So I am very much anticipating a smut filled sequel, or a filler book in between with all the smut. Sarah?

I would argue that this book is no more adult than her other series. Yes it is gory, yes it does explore a few adult topics and yes there are scenes of a sexual nature. But that is the same for all of her other series. The only different I would say is that House of Blood and Earth is a bit more complex than anything else Sarah has ever written. I personally think, and have for a long time that the ToG and ACOTAR have been misrepresented and probably should also be adult fantasy based on the content.

I have so much more I want to say about this book but I didn’t want to end up giving away any major plot points or spoilers. Just know, you will be shocked to your core on so many occasions. I found myself saying, “I didn’t see that coming” frequently.

House of Blood and Earth was everything I wanted and so much more. It is currently, and probably will remain the easiest 5 stars I have given in 2020. I am really struggling to fault it. I have never read a book over 500 pages and wanted to immediately start it again. I could dive straight back into this book right away. If you haven’t picked this book up then please do. If you are worried that it will not live up to the hype, please don’t. This book was so much and I cant wait for the sequel already!
