Pumpkin Heads | Rainbow Rowell & Faith Erin Hicks | Review

“I’m your friend. And friends don’t let friends live small lives.”

Deja and Josiah are seasonal best friends.

Every autumn, all through high school, they’ve worked together at the best pumpkin patch in the whole wide world. (Not many people know that the best pumpkin patch in the whole wide world is in Omaha, Nebraska, but it definitely is.) They say good-bye every Halloween, and they’re reunited every September 1.

But this Halloween is different—Josiah and Deja are finally seniors, and this is their last season at the pumpkin patch. Their last shift together. Their last good-bye.

Josiah’s ready to spend the whole night feeling melancholy about it. Deja isn’t ready to let him. She’s got a plan: What if—instead of moping and the usual slinging lima beans down at the Succotash Hut—they went out with a bang? They could see all the sights! Taste all the snacks! And Josiah could finally talk to that cute girl he’s been mooning over for three years…

What if their last shift was an adventure?

I absolutely love a graphic novel, so when I saw that this was being released I knew I had to get my hands on it. I am so grateful as a wonderful bookstagram friend of mine bought this for me off my wishlist.

This is the perfect book to read in the autumn/winter months. It gives off such a cosy vibe whatever time of year you read it I guarantee that you will get the autumn vibe even if its the middle of the summer and boiling hot outside.

I absolutely loved both the main characters. Josiah is so sweet and lovely, he’s such a shy character that I really did grow to love. Deja, is his polar opposite which is why I think the friendship worked so well. Deja is definitely one of my favourite characters ever, especially from graphic novels that I have read. I found myself getting to know her character more and more and relating her to me. We are so similar that I found myself laughing throughout at some of the things she says and does. That girl loves food, I love food, she will kill for food, I will kill for food. We’re practically soul mates.

I absolutely love the artwork in Pumpkin Heads, it is absolutely amazing. You can tell that so much thought and effort have gone into it. With every page turned I found myself mesmerised by how beautiful everything was. I was lost in so many of the illustrations I just could not stop admiring them. The colour palette and the style really captured the autumn vibe.

I devoured this within an hour. This is the only thing that makes me sad about graphic novels, they are just not long enough. I wanted more from these characters. I really want another one to find out what happens next. Please?
